News Content and Licensing
What news content you receive through Datastreamer, how licensed content is flagged, and what to check before you display it.
This page is general guidance for customers using news sources. It is not legal advice.
What You Receive
You receive news content that is publicly accessible on the publisher's site. For paywalled articles, you receive what a visitor without a subscription can see, not the full article.
Licensed Content
Datastreamer does not hold enterprise news licenses. If you need full paywalled or licensed content (for example Bloomberg, or titles covered by NLA Media Access in the UK), bring your own license. Datastreamer can work with the licensed provider you use.
Display Rights Flag
News documents carry a content.type field that tells you how the content may be displayed:
content.type | Meaning |
|---|---|
newsfeed_public | No display restriction from the source. |
news_licensed | The content is licensed and may only be shown truncated (for example a headline and a short excerpt) to your own users. |
Your Responsibility
Check that how you display or redistribute news content to your own clients fits the publisher's and provider's terms. When in doubt, show the headline and a short excerpt, and link to the original article.
Coverage
Start with open news sources, then add licensed providers where you find gaps.
